Flora’s Habit Tracker

I’m sitting here at my desk, in my tiny home office and I just yelled up at Harry: “What day is it? Are we scheduled for the kitchen this week?”

I could easily turn my chair to the left and look at my calendar, but if I did, I’d have to move the whole chair back which completely messes up my perfectly egernomic desk set up – so instead, I’m yelling up the stairs like an idiot. 😊

I do sometimes lose track of the days – I image everyone does sometimes, especially when they are under stress.

But lately I’ve been losing track of EVERYTHING!  Did I go outside?  Did I play with the dog? Did she get her CBD tincture? Did I get mine?

Stress is a killer and it will decrease your immune response, so instead of being stressed about what I did or didn’t do and mad at myself for not being able to track it week by week, I decided to create a single page, quick and easy LIFE TRACKER!

You can also use it track chores, medicine, meals – anything really.

Please right click the image and save it to your computer. It’s a jpg, so you can just insert it into a blank word document, stretch it out to fill the page, print & enjoy!

Face Mask Pattern

Cut & Sew Pattern Surgical Type Face Mask with Filter Pocket

The mask design is intended to hold a filter in place or to be used as a protective cover for an n95.  We have designed the mask with ties & not loops because elastic loops will break rendering the mask useless.

No matter what material they are made out of, a fabric mask WILL NOT protect you against viruses!

These masks are intended for medical professionals who have access to Medical Grade filter material that can be place between the mask layers and can be used to preserve the life of an n95 mask.

MAKERS: When choosing fabric, remember, these will be worn for at least 4 hours. Make sure the material has been washed at least twice prior to sewing. Ensure the seams are strong and the straps are double sewn. The mask material should be soft enough to wear comfortably and washable in very hot water. DO NOT USE POLYESTER, rayon, nylon or other plastic materials. They will not do well with bleach and hot water! We recommend using all-natural fabrics like cotton or a hemp/cotton blend.

Masks should be not be re-worn until they have been washed and disinfected.

Masks should only be used with a n95 filter or other non-woven, medical grade filter in the pocket.

Remove the filter before washing the mask.

WASH and disinfect the mask often.

DISCARD & REPLACE the filter often.

INSTRUCTIONS

Wash fabric at least twice in hot water.  If you can, use hemp or cotton.

FABRIC STRAPS:

Cut out 2 strips of fabric 22” long x 1.5” wide.

Fold in half, inside out – secure with pins & iron flat.

Sew along open edge, turn right side out & iron flat.

Fold in the open edges and sew securely shut.

MASK PATTERN:

Print out 2 copies of the pattern (it will fit on 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper – landscape). You’ll know it’s the correct size when the 1×1 square image is exactly 1″ x 1″ !

Match bottom edge of paper pattern and tape together at the fold line.

Pin pattern to inside of fabric.   Mark fabric & cut pattern.

FINAL FABRIC SQUARE SIZE: 8.5” x 14.5”

SEWING INSTRUCTIONS:

Fold the pleats so they face down – pin and iron flat.  (One side should fold one direction the other side should fold the opposite direction. Imagine pushing a filter into the pocket – the pleats should NOT interfere with filter insertion!)

You should have 3 pleats on each face of the mask, 6 pleats total.

Quick sew the pleats down. Hem the left and right mask edges.

Hem one of the top edges.

FINISHING:

Attach one strap to the other top edge, hem edge while attaching the strap securely.  (DO NOT sew top edges together – leave open so a filter can be inserted between the 2 pieces of fabric)

Fold fabric in half, right side out, so the top edges match up and sew left and right edges together.

Sew bottom strap along bottom edge securely.

DISINFECT and PACKAGE FOR DISTRIBUTION to local hospitals and health care centers

Honestly, for the last two weeks, I have been spinning. I am trying to calm myself down and stop focusing on this horrible news cycle and it’s so ‘effin hard, but I have resolved to:

  1. Turn off the TV and take a break from my computer and phone.
  2. Go outside and sit in the sun watch the squirrels and wonder at the beauty of our world.
  3. Focus on small projects – I’ve been wanting to create an essential oil bug spray that is effective AND doesn’t smell horrible, so I’ll start back working on that.
  4. Park My Phone (I’m treating it like an old-fashioned hard line phone – I have stopped carrying it around with me and checking it every 10 minutes.
  5. Focus on What I Can Do (Product development)
  6. Figure Out A Way To Help Others (We will soon be back to baking goodies)
  7. Eat A LOT of garlic and turmeric and get the juicer out for fresh organic veggie juice.
  8. Drink a LOT of tea, including my own 🙂
  9. Medicate often. I send a puff of thanks to The Great Green Gods of Ganja for access to Medical Marijuana here in Colorado.

SARS-CoV-2: How A Person’s Immune System Defeated The Virus

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/sars-cov-2-how-a-patients-immune-system-defeated-the-virus-in-3-days

Medical News Today Article (Written by Maria Cohut, Ph.D. on March 19, 2020 – Fact checked by Rita Ponce, Ph.D.)

Although some people who contract SARS-CoV-2 experience serious symptoms, others are able to recover after a fairly short period of time. A new study shows how the immune system of one otherwise healthy person was able to fight the virus within days.

The researchers found that during days 7–9 following symptom onset, there was an increase in immunoglobulins — which are the most common type of antibodies — rushing to fight the virus.

This increase in immunoglobulins persisted up to day 20 after symptom onset, according to the analyses.

At days 7–9 following symptom onset, a large number of specialized helper T cells, killer T cells, and B cells — all of which are crucial immune cells — were also active in the patient’s blood samples.

This suggested that the patient’s body had been using many different “weapons” effectively against the new virus.

“Three days after the patient was admitted, we saw large populations of several immune cells, which are often a tell-tale sign of recovery during seasonal influenza infection, so we predicted that the patient would recover in 3 days, which is what happened,” notes Dr. Nguyen.

The Red Dots Are Freaking Me Out!

We breathe the same air. We eat, we fear, we tremble – we love. I truly believe, that in the face of real crisis, love is the only thing that will get us through.

Viruses do not have a political standpoint. They don’t go on TV and spout hate and division and fear for ratings and ad revenue. They don’t honor imaginary borders or rules or laws. They don’t care what you call them. They just go about their business of infecting and spreading and spreading and infecting. That’s what they do and they are very good at it. And sometimes, horrifyingly, they are very very good at it…

Look at this animation. Study it and watch it over and over and over and you tell me if borders matter in the face of those horrible marching red dots spreading and growing and multiplying… It’s a gut wrenching truth for everyone on this small blue planet – it will never be the same and we will never be the same.

Map Screen Grabs are from: Coronavirus COVID-19 Global Cases by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University (JHU)

But I don’t want that to change my nature. I don’t want the fear of the unknown and what the horrors that I keep imagining in my frightened and spinning brain – all these thing that make me fearful and afraid, but I don’t like being afraid. I really don’t. (Click here to read a little about stress response: https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/understanding-the-stress-response )

Make room in your heart for your neighbors. Make room in your life for strangers.

Create hope. Create love. Create a way forward, free from fear.

We are all in the together and in the end, not one single one of us is getting out alive, so be kind, lend a hand and most importantly be present in your life (and turn off that damned TV!)

Immunity & Garlic

GARLIC & YOUR IMMUNE RESPONSE

Flora Says: All medicine is food & all food is medicine.

This is the first in a series about boosting our immune response naturally.

When I was little, my Grandfather used to keep a concoction of mushed up raw garlic & yogurt in the refrigerator. It smelled to high heaven, but he didn’t care. He ate it every day, and he lived to be 94 years old!  I’m not saying it was ONLY the garlic & yogurt, but according to current research, garlic can have some serious immune boosting effects…!

FIRST: Get fresh local organic garlic. You can used processed or dried in a pinch, but all sources are finding fresh is best!

SECOND: Start small.  Garlic and other organosulfur concentrations can be irritating. If you are getting tummy troubles cut back your consumption.

THIRD: Figure out a way, like my Grandpa did, to get some garlic in your diet every day.  If you really hate the flavor and aftereffects of eating fresh garlic (smelling like garlic!), then this is probably not for you 😊

RECIPE: FLORA’S ORGANIC YOGURT with CRUSHED GARLIC

1 Quart Organic Yogurt

1 Whole Clove Organic Garlic – peeled and crushed.

INSTRUCTIONS: Scoop the yogurt into a wide mouthed glass jar. Always use glass & make sure the lid is nice and tight otherwise you whole refrigerator will smell like garlic!

The quickest way to process the fresh garlic is to pull the clove apart and discard the root end. (NOTE: If there is NO root end, do not buy / use that garlic – it’s been imported and is not fresh). Using a large bladed knife, place the garlic pieces on your cutting board and using the flat of the knife, push down hard & crush the garlic. This will not only mash up the garlic quite nicely, it will release the skin, so now you don’t have to peel them!  Remove all of the skin and any hard bits. If you are noticing large pieces, crush or cut the garlic up a bit more.

Once you are happy with the size of your garlic mash, scoop it all up and add to your yogurt jar. Mix well, cover tightly and enjoy.  Adding a pinch of salt can add to the flavor, but be careful you only use a pinch.

HOW TO USE THIS MAGIC CONCOCTION:

Yogurt & Garlic make a delicious side dish that can be combined with any number of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern meals.

Use instead of sour cream for a creative, delicious and low fat alternative in baking and cooking.

Use as a base for dips, marinades or sauces.

Or, be like Grandpa Nahabed and grab a spoon and have at it!

ALTERNATIVE RECIPE:

If you don’t have any yogurt, you can add the crushed garlic to high quality olive oil or avocado oil and add to salads or use to add flavor to your cooking and baking.  It’s delicious on toast or added to your morning eggs.

ADDING FLAVOR:

You can always add a little flavor by grating lemon zest into your concoction, or even adding different chopped fresh herbs. Just make sure everything is nice and dry – adding water to your jar can create a microcosm of bad, so just be careful and keep everything really clean.

Immunomodulation and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Garlic Compounds (Published April 2015)

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4417560/

Abstract

The benefits of garlic to health have been proclaimed for centuries; however, only recently have Allium sativum and its derivatives been proposed as promising candidates for maintaining the homeostasis of the immune system. The complex biochemistry of garlic makes it possible for variations in processing to yield different preparations with differences in final composition and compound proportion. In this review, we assess the most recent experimental results, which indicate that garlic appears to enhance the functioning of the immune system by stimulating certain cell types, such as macrophages, lymphocytes, natural killer (NK) cells, dendritic cells, and eosinophils, by mechanisms including modulation of cytokine secretion, immunoglobulin production, phagocytosis, and macrophage activation. Finally, because immune dysfunction plays an important role in the development and progress of several diseases, we critically examined immunoregulation by garlic extracts and compounds isolated, which can contribute to the treatment and prevention of pathologies such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disorders, gastric ulcer, and even cancer. We concluded that A. sativum modulates cytokine secretion and that such modulation may provide a mechanism of action for many of their therapeutic effects.

Garlic: An Immunity-Boosting Superstar

https://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/garlic-immunity-boosting-superstar

For thousands of years, people all over the world have hailed garlic as an elixir of health. Its cloves are said to help treat the common cold, keep the plague at bay, and even ward off vampires. Despite its notorious odor, this veggie is the bulb of a plant in the sweet-smelling lily family. Ancient writings show that garlic was used as an aphrodisiac in India and as currency in Egypt.

Today, at just 4 calories per clove, it’s a low-cal immunity-boosting superstar. One clove contains 5 mg of calcium, 12 mg of potassium, and more than 100 sulfuric compounds — powerful enough to wipe out bacteria and infection (it was used to prevent gangrene in both world wars). Raw garlic, not cooked or dried, is most beneficial for health, since heat and water inactivate sulfur enzymes, which can diminish garlic’s antibiotic effects. In clinical trials, the toxin-fighting staple seems to lower blood pressure and cholesterol and kill parasites in the body.

Aged Garlic Extract Modifies Human Immunity

https://academic.oup.com/jn/article/146/2/433S/4584824

Abstract

Garlic contains numerous compounds that have the potential to influence immunity. Immune cells, especially innate immune cells, are responsible for the inflammation necessary to kill pathogens. Two innate lymphocytes, γδ-T and natural killer (NK) cells, appear to be susceptible to diet modification. The purpose of this review was to summarize the influence of aged garlic extract (AGE) on the immune system. The author’s laboratory is interested in AGE’s effects on cell proliferation and activation and inflammation and to learn whether those changes might affect the occurrence and severity of colds and flu. Healthy human participants (n = 120), between 21 and 50 y of age, were recruited for a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel-intervention study to consume 2.56 g AGE/d or placebo supplements for 90 d during the cold and flu season. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated before and after consumption, and γδ-T and NK cell function was assessed by flow cytometry. The effect on cold and flu symptoms was determined by using daily diary records of self-reported illnesses. After 45 d of AGE consumption, γδ-T and NK cells proliferated better and were more activated than cells from the placebo group. After 90 d, although the number of illnesses was not significantly different, the AGE group showed reduced cold and flu severity, with a reduction in the number of symptoms, the number of days participants functioned suboptimally, and the number of work/school days missed. These results suggest that AGE supplementation may enhance immune cell function and may be partly responsible for the reduced severity of colds and flu reported. The results also suggest that the immune system functions well with AGE supplementation, perhaps with less accompanying inflammation. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT01390116
