FDA LABEL RESEARCH
Harry & I are working on the label for the Almond Cinnamon Granola. It's been selling so well at the Eagle Farmers Market, we are currently working on getting it on the shelf in some local Boise stores.
Because we are a small business (less than $500k / year) we do not have to have the nutrition labels on our product (yay!), but we'll still need to fulfill the basic requirements including listing the ingredients. And stores will have requirements for bar code, etc., so it will need to have some space for other information. It's likely we'll need two stickers per container. The front will have the info about the product and the back will have the ingredients, bar code, etc.
So far we only have the front sticker, so I'd better get to work and mock something up!
BARCODE / UPC
We'll need one of those. After a bit of panic, I went to my info. source (wikipedia) and got the skinny on the requirements and the company that issues these puppies: http://www.gs1us.org/get-started
The cost is $250 for 1-10 barcodes, so I guess we'll start there! This is the start up fee. It will cost $50 to continue using it. (AJ says to use a different company, so more research is needed).
THEY ATE IT ALL!
BaHaHAhahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaa. I just spoke with the manager of Huckleberry & she said the staff ate up ALL of the granola samples we dropped off last week. Sweet! We've got more samples to drop off tomorrow and now that I've got a label mocked up we can discuss their requirements, and get the paperwork filled out. It looks like they may have room in their bulk area right now and once we do that hopefully we can transition to some shelf space!
